Fishermen have known for ages that providing cover for fish brings in more and bigger fish to catch. A Christmas tree rig is an excellent and easy way to do just that.
To properly tie a Christmas tree rig you should first remove all ornaments, tinsel, lights and anything else left hanging around. Next, trim off about a foot and a half of the lower limbs. You do this so you can place the bottom of the tree down in a concrete block. With the tree in the block turn the whole thing over on it-s side and then nail two 2×4-s in a cross pattern on the bottom of the tree. Your tree is now weighted and the 2×4-s will help it to stand up when dropped into the water.
If the bottom around the pier is really uneven, you can tie an old milk jug to the top of the tree to help keep it standing up straight. If you are tying the tree directly to the pier itself, simply tie a rope to the top of the tree and let it down until it touches bottom. Raise it up about an inch and tie it off. You are now ready to catch more and bigger fish.
